The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) has completed its preliminary investigations on a dormant company which received permits to import 50 vehicles tax-free.
Miti secretary-general Lokman Hakim Ali said the ministry has yet to decide whether to make the findings public because the matter has to be deliberated by minister Darell Leiking.
”We have to escalate to the minister (first) and probably will decide whether it will be made public,” said Lokman, after this reporter pointed out that it has been two months since the matter came to light.
In March, automotive website DS&F uncovered that Miti appointed 38 new “approved permit” holders.
”Approved permits” were created during Dr Mahathir Mohamad's first tenure as prime minister in a bid to encourage more bumiputera car dealers.
However, critics, eventually including Mahathir and DS&F, alleged that the system was open to abuse and sold outside the system for a quick profit.
Miti instituted its New Open Approved Permit Policy early this year to improve the system.
Following this, Malaysiakini discovered that at least one company - SH Warisan Sdn Bhd - was dormant and did not even have a showroom. - Mkini
