KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah today confirmed that Malaysia had received a request from India to extradite controversial preacher Dr Zakir Naik.
He said New Delhi had sent an application but that Putrajaya had decided to stick to its decision not to send Naik back.
“We received the application from the Indian government, I don’t remember when.
“For now, there is no new decision. We are sticking to the original decision,” he said after launching a book titled “Bantuan Demokrasi Pendanaan Asing Di Malaysia” by Takiyuddin Ismail at Universiti Malaya here.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad maintained on June 10 the government’s reluctance to send Naik back to India, where money laundering charges involving about RM115 million have been filed against him.
Mahathir said Malaysia had the right not to allow Naik to be extradited if he would not be accorded justice.
“Zakir Naik in general feels that he is not going to get a fair trial (in India),” he said.
Naik has also been accused of inciting enmity and hatred between different religious communities in his preaching.- FMT
