The Coroner's Court ruling that the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim was a criminal act is timely and must be respected by all quarters, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
He said he welcomed the court decision but said racial postings on social media about the matter should stop before they blow out of proportion, incite hatred and deepen confusion among the different communities.
"Respect the verdict and help police find the culprits behind the murder instead of posting racial remarks on social media," said the Finance Minister who is on a working visit to Penang today.
Yesterday, the Coroner's Court ruled that Adib died as the result of a criminal act perpetrated by two or three unidentified assailants during the riots near the Seri Maha Mariamman Temple in Seafield, Subang, Selangor on Nov 27 last year.
"It was a tragedy but we hope the family can now find closure. Justice must be served by finding the culprits behind this incident," Lim told reporters after launching three new services at the Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital in Mount Erskine.
Lim also criticised those who posted about the police shooting incident on Sept 23 in Bayan Lepas where a factory employee who ran amok was shot dead by police. The worker had earlier killed his supervisor and injured another staff.
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has also warned against speculation over the incident, clarifying the deceased was influenced by events in the Middle East.
However, Kelantan Puteri Umno vice-president Nurul Amal Mohd Fauzi described the dead man as a "martyr" who had defended the Prophet Muhammad from insults.
Describing some social media posts about the incident as "twisted", Lim said it was wrong to see the incident from a racial and religious lens.
"Those (racial and religious) issues are not related to the incident at all," Lim said, while noting that deceased had reportedly suffered from depression.
He urged Malaysians to promote tolerance against certain quarters bent on instigating others to undermine the peace and harmony among the races. - Mkini
