KOTA BARU: Kelantan police will not hesitate to take stern action against underaged children found riding motorcycles without helmets.
State Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department chief Superintendent Zamri Mohd Rawi said teenagers found doing so could be slapped with a compound of between RM150 and RM300 under the traffic rules.
"Some teenagers in the state especially the underaged ones might not realise that not wearing helmets when riding a motorcycle is an offence.
"Their intention is to have fun without realising they not only breached the rules and will be fined but also risk losing their lives if something bad happens," he said.
Under the law, Zamri said all motorcyclists and their pillion riders are required to wear helmets while on the road.
"Exceptions will only be given to Punjabis who wear turbans instead of helmets," he said.
Parents, he said would also be fined for allowing either their underaged children or those with no licences to ride motorcycles or other vehicles.
Zamri was asked to comment on a group of underaged teenagers who were spotted not wearing helmets
while riding their bikes.
The teenagers, all boys, were seen riding their motorcycles along Jalan Peringat here around 6pm yesterday. - NST
