1MDB asset recovery: No progress, but M'sia committed to getting back more

The amount of assets recovered from the 1MDB scandal has remained unchanged at RM13.4 billion since September last year.

The figure was revealed by Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz during an interview with Bloomberg this morning.

"The next step, regardless of Covid-19, is to secure the remaining assets, above and beyond what we have achieved today.

"The Malaysian government remains committed to undertaking responsible and pragmatic approach in the repatriation of the assets in a way that is beneficial for the people," said Zafrul.

In November, the federal government's 2021 fiscal outlook report had stated that the government had recovered RM13.4 billion as of end-September last year.

1MDB was established by then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak back in 2012 as a sovereign wealth fund.

Instead of generating wealth, the state-owned company had burned a massive debt hole for Malaysia. As of end-September 2020, 1MDB still owed creditors RM32.3 billion.

A big portion of the debts was raised by Goldman Sachs. After threats of legal action, Goldman Sachs reached a settlement of RM6 billion with the Muhyiddin Yassin administration.

Details of that settlement remain a state secret.

On July 7 last year, Najib has been convicted of plundering RM42 million from a former 1MDB subsidiary called SRC International Sdn Bhd. An appeal is in progress.

He is currently also being tried for plundering RM2.3 billion from 1MDB. - Mkini
