KUALA LUMPUR: The Umno general assembly will be held virtually, should the Movement Control Order and the State of Emergency continue, said its secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

He said details on the assembly, which is usually held on a large scale, will be informed later, in line with changes following the Covid-19 pandemic.

"The party's management meeting and Supreme Council Working Committee (MKT) will decide when the general assembly will be held.

"Umno will keep working for Malaysians, no matter how big the challenge ahead. The fight will continue," he said on his Twitter @ahmadmaslan today.

On Jan 12, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had decreed that a State of Emergency be implemented nationwide until Aug 1.

The move was to control the Covid-19 outbreak in the country.

Following the announcement, Ahmad on Jan 18 had announced that Umno general assembly, slated to be held yesterday (Jan 30) and today (Jan 31), was postponed, with the new dates for the assembly to be informed later.

Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had agreed that the party elections, at all levels, should be continued as scheduled on suitable dates this year.

On Jan 7, the party's information chief Shahril Hamdan said that the MKT had decided for a motion on severing ties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and consolidating cooperation with Pas will be discussed in the general assembly.

The move, Shahril said to enable the motion to be refined and decided at the highest level of the party, as provided in the party constitution.

Apart from the two urgent motions, the Umno division level meeting had proposed for the 15th General Election be held before the end of the first quarter of this year, to enable a new mandate to be returned to the people. - NST
