KUALA LUMPUR: Two models have filed a suit for breach of contract, fraud and conspiracy against a local broadcaster and a production company for failure to honour an agreement pertaining to their participation in a beauty contest.

R Durga Devi, who was crowned champion, and R Durrgah, who was placed third in the contest titled “Azhagin Azhagi 2020” have named Measat Broadcast Network Systems Sdn Bhd (Astro) and Keris Media Networks Sdn Bhd as defendants.

Durga Devi is asking for RM60,000, the prize money promised to the winner and Durrgah RM17,000 for emerging third. The first runner-up was to get RM37,000.

In the suit filed in the sessions court today by Asheeq Ali & Co, the two, aged 26, are asking for other damages and other relief deemed fit by the court.

They want a declaration that Astro breached the contract and that both defendants committed fraud and conspiracy.

In the statement of claim, they said Astro organised the beauty pageant and appointed Keris Media to manage the recording and production.

The contest was broadcast via the Vinmeen channel that is available on Astro’s satellite TV services.

An audition was conducted at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 12 and 13, 2019 to select 20 finalists who were required to stay in a villa in Rawang, Selangor for 16 days with no access to phones and internet facilities.

They said nine episodes were recorded from Nov 11 to Nov 26, 2019 at the villa.

Vinmeen then broadcast the pre-recorded beauty pageant from Sept 3 to Nov 8 last year.

The two said the contract stated they would be paid the prize money within three months from Nov 26, 2019, when they were announced as winner and second runner-up.

They said at the grand finale broadcast on Nov 8 last year, both the defendants maliciously attempted to blur or alter the recording to prevent the public from viewing the mock cheques that were presented.

As such, they said, the defendants had conspired to commit fraud against them.

Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi, who represented the women, said the legal papers would be served on the defendants once the sealed copies were obtained from the court. - FMT
