PETALING JAYA: Inspector General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador has vowed to take action against those responsible for the locking up of a minor who was then raped by another inmate.
“I intend to have all those responsible be charged in court,” he told FMT. Hamid said he will consult the attorney-general on the matter.
A 16-year-old girl has reported being raped by another inmate while she was held in a police lock-up at the Miri police station on Jan 9.
The Sarawak police chief has suspended the two policemen on duty and promised to conduct an in-depth investigation into the incident.
Yesterday, a senator from Sarawak, Alan Ling Sie Kiong, who accompanied the girl and her father to lodge a report, said a transparent investigation should be conducted, even to the extent of a royal commission of inquiry being set up.
“The failure to strictly comply with the lock-up rules, or bypassing them as in this case, has allowed abuses in the handling of those in custody,” he said.
Batu Kawan MP Kasthuri Patto has called for heads to roll, saying the police should have known in the first place that children are not allowed to be detained in a police lock-up.
A pressure group, Eliminating Deaths & Abuse In Custody Together said police had violated the Child Act 2001, which mandates that at least one woman police officer should be assigned to take care of a female juvenile detained in a lockup. - FMT
