Malim Nawar assemblyperson Leong Cheok Keng will not respond to the DAP disciplinary committee’s letter seeking an explanation over reports on his alleged move to join MCA.
Refusing to be “singled out”, he said the committee should seek explanations from other leaders who made statements which “deviated from party principles”.
Leong told Malaysiakini: “Some leaders claimed they wanted to create a new political landscape with Umno or other parties. How come they don’t have to explain?
“This is unfair to me. Therefore, I have decided not to provide an explanation.
“If the committee wants an explanation, then everyone should explain as well. There should not be double standard. I should not be made the sole target.”
Although Leong did not name the leaders, he had crossed swords with Perak DAP chief Nga Kor Ming on more than one occasion, including when the party momentarily considered working with Umno last December to form the new Perak state government.
Asked if he was concerned about being sacked from DAP, Leong cited a Chinese novel The Smiling, Proud Wanderer and compared himself to the protagonist who was expelled by his master.
“I am also curious if they have expelled me,” he added.
Last Friday, China Press quoted sources as stating that MCA is in the process of finalising Leong’s membership and party president Wee Ka Siong would personally hand over the membership card to the assemblyperson.
Quizzed on this, Leong chose to remain tight-lipped but assured his constituents that his service centre would continue operating.
Leong also revealed that he and his family have been subjected to cyberbullying over this issue.
“They even drew me as an animal,” he lamented, adding that he is open to debating the matter concerning his political stand with critics.
“When they (DAP leaders) faced charges in court or were investigated, they said their families should not be dragged in.
“But why is it that my family can be attacked?” he asked. - Mkini
