'Datuk' apologises over hotpot assault, hopes matter can be put to rest

A "Datuk" who was arrested on suspicion of assaulting and threatening a man at a hotpot restaurant in Tropicana Avenue, Petaling Jaya, has apologised for his actions.

In a video that was spread on social media, the 42-year-old man can be seen facing the camera and reading a prepared statement of apology in Malay.

"I... would like to apologise to the young man and woman whom I hurt, and also to all of Malaysia. To clear things up, I admit that my friend and I did something unreasonable and excessive.

"This is because we were not in a rational state of mind at that time and I was angry," he said, adding that as an older man, his pride was hurt after being chastised by someone younger.

"Things got worse when my friend thought I was hit by the young man, so he acted by slapping the man... as things escalated, I became more out of control and ended up slapping the young woman.

"I feel very regretful about my out-of-control actions, and at that time, my friend and I were drunk," he said.

He urged the public not to involve his family and friends in the matter as it was his own mistake.

The man added that he hoped the incident could be put to rest because they had handed themselves over to the police and are ready to face punishment.

On Jan 14, it was reported that the "Datuk" had assaulted another customer at the TST Hotpot restaurant, Tropicana Avenue at 9pm, after a 31-year-old man asked him to lower his voice and to not make too much noise.

The "Datuk" had also reportedly slapped a young woman before leaving the restaurant.

The 31-year-old man, who works as a manager, filed a police report after the incident.

The "Datuk" and his friend, who is believed to be his accomplice, were arrested the same day.

The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, as well as Section 503 and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation. - Mkini
