PETALING JAYA: Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin has hit out at certain members from his party, Umno, for pressing the government to call for a snap election now, amid a raging pandemic.
“Those calling for a general election before the pandemic is brought under control are being irresponsible.
“And I know that among those calling for elections to be held swiftly are those coming from my own party. Don’t be selfish,” he said in a Twitter post.
The science, technology and innovation minister has joined the chorus of calls from opposition MPs for the government not to hold elections for now and to manage the Covid-19 situation first.
Previously, in a joint statement, 14 opposition MPs from various parties urged the Perikatan Nasional government against dissolving Parliament and making way for elections, when daily Covid-19 infections remained high at four digits.
PN’s fate is hanging in the balance after 143 of Umno’s 191 divisions called for the party to withdraw its cooperation with PPBM, during annual general meetings over the weekend.
Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub has already quit as Malaysian Palm Oil Board chairman, while Khairy also announced that he was ready to quit as a minister if the Umno Supreme Council ordered him to do so. - FMT
