The Malaysian Academic Association Congress (MAAC) has suggested that universities provide more space for lecturers and professors to contribute their knowledge and expertise, including during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Its president Prof Mohd Idrus Mohd Masirin said lecturers were somewhat constrained to share their knowledge and expertise due to their workloads.
“The role of lecturers has changed according to today’s situation and needs. In the 1990s, their scope of duties was the '5P', namely, teaching and learning, research, consulting, management and community service.
"But now we are given an additional role of income generation, internationalisation, professional recognition and relationship with industry.
“I suggest that academicians be given back the flexible working hours as what has been done by Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM),” he said in a statement to Bernama today.
He was commenting on the statement made by education icon Tun Arshad Ayub, who said that more than 2,500 professors in the country were below par.
On the standard set for professors in the country, Mohd Idrus said it is determined through the process of evaluation and promotion.
