Govt okays full capacity on public transport despite MCO

In the 7-week MCO which started on March 18, transport services such as express buses and airlines could only operate at half-capacity.

PETALING JAYA: Public buses, rail services and ferries will now be allowed to operate at full capacity during the movement control order (MCO).

Social distancing in planes, which was initially among the SOPs for aviation during the first MCO in March, will also not be enforced now according to a list of SOPs for the country’s second MCO released by the transport ministry today.

During the initial seven-week MCO which started on March 18, transport services such as express buses and airlines could only operate at half-capacity.

Bus operators in Sabah will have to operate at 50% capacity and are also only allowed to operate within their district.

Meanwhile, passengers using rail services, such as MRT and LRT, are also encouraged to top up their Touch ‘n Go cards online.

Among the other SOPs which will be enforced throughout all modes of transport include:

  • Mandatory wearing of face masks
  • Temperature checks at public transport hubs, such as bus stations, ferry terminals, etc
  • Registration through the MySejahtera app for contact tracing
  • Reduction in social interaction
  • Transport terminals have to provide hand sanitisers at ticket counters and main entrances.

As for e-hailing services, passengers and drivers were reminded to wear masks at all times, with the use of cashless payments and the use of the MySejahtera app encouraged. - FMT
