Health Ministry releases hygiene tips for foreign workers in quarantine

For the first time ever, the Health Ministry has released a set of hygiene tips aimed at foreign workers in Covid-19 quarantine centres, amidst more targeted screening of those in foreign worker-dependent industries.

The guidelines were shared on the Health Ministry's Facebook page and provided the instructions in Malay, English, Hindi and Myanmarese.

Currently, the Health Ministry is using quarantine centres, including the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park in Serdang (Maeps, above), for low-risk Covid-19 cases.

Employers are also required to provide quarantine centres to isolate their foreign workers who are confirmed to be Covid-19 positive.

According to the Immigration Department, Malaysian industries are allowed to source foreign labour from 15 countries.

A World Bank study in 2019 noted that there were an estimated 1.8 million registered foreign workers in Malaysia as of 2017 and an estimated 3.3 million in total in the country as of 2018.

While the move by the Health Ministry has been generally welcomed by netizens, some have questioned why major vernacular languages in the country such as Chinese, Tamil, Iban, Bidayuh and Kadazan, among others, were not included.

Others defended the Health Ministry by pointing out that virtually all Malaysians are familiar with Bahasa Malaysia and Covid-19 hygiene practices.
