'Hotpot' Datuk, friend plead guilty to assaulting young couple

 

PETALING JAYA: Two company directors, including a Datuk who was caught on a viral video assaulting a young couple, have pleaded guilty at a Magistrate's Court here to assaulting and causing public nuisance at a steamboat restaurant in Persiaran Tropicana.

Datuk Tan Wai Khan, 42, and Ang Mow Loong, 40, made the plea after the charges were read out before magistrate Nurshahira Abd Salim here on Thursday (Jan 21).

The court, however, fixed April 2 for hearing of statement of facts and sentencing.

According to the first charge, Tan and Ang were jointly accused of voluntarily causing harm by hitting Kwan Pei Chong, 31, at Restoran Steamboat TST, Tropicana Avenue, Damansara, at 9pm on Jan 12.

The charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a maximum one year imprisonment or up to RM2,000 fine or both, upon conviction.

For the second charge, they were jointly accused of causing public nuisance to the customers and employee of the same restaurant, at the same place and time.

The charge under Section 290 of the Penal Code carries a maximum fine of RM400, upon conviction.

Tan also pleaded guilty to two counts under Section 323 of the Code for voluntarily causing hurt by hitting to two more victims - Magdalene Wong Chung Yi, 31, and Lee Dek Quan, 25 - at the same place and time.

Tan, however, did not plead guilty to a charge of mischief under Section 427 of the Code.

He was accused of smashing plates and bowls belonging to Kwan at the same place and time.

He faces a maximum 12 months in jail or fine or both, if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Zubaidah Mahat offered bail at RM7,000 for each charge.

Lawyer Datuk Suraj Singh, who represented both men, asked for a lower amount as his clients had given their cooperation during investigation.

Magistrate Nurshahira allowed bail at RM2,000 for each charge for each men, which meant Tan was allowed a RM10,000 bail in one surety while Ang was allowed RM4,000 bail in one surety. - Star
