PETALING JAYA: A UiTM law student whose struggles were highlighted by FMT some time back has thanked the many generous readers who stepped forward to help alleviate the financial strain she and her family were experiencing.
Aliya (not her real name) says she has received so much in terms of donations that she no longer requires any more.
Prior to this, Aliya, who lost her father just two months before starting her degree course, had to work part-time almost every day to help her mother, who is also ill, put food on the table.
Her father was the family’s breadwinner but after his passing, this burden fell on Aliya, who still had to help look after her younger siblings, one of whom is physically disabled.
Juggling work, studies, and responsibilities at home for up to 18-hours a day eventually took a toll on her. Her grades started to slip and it was only a matter of time before she lost her scholarship as well. Then the insomnia began.
She says that after her plight was highlighted by FMT, she received many calls and kind messages from people wishing to help her.
“I received a brand new laptop to replace my old one which stopped working last year. I have also received enough money to pay off my debts and to help with our bills and my expenses for the coming semesters.”
Aliya says one kind individual has also pledged to give her RM600 a month so she no longer has to work part-time to supplement the family income.
“I have resigned from my part-time job. Now I can focus on my studies.
“I want to thank everyone for their concern. The people who have helped me do not know me personally or even care about my race or religion. I am deeply touched by their pure and kind hearts.”
She said some of the donors have even asked about her wellbeing and how she has been coping since.
“It is really such a blessing to be surrounded by so many good people. I cannot ask for more.” - FMT
