Multimedia and Communications Minister Saifuddin Abdullah has ordered the ministry's secretary-general Mohammad Mentek to launch a thorough investigation into MCMC's old tweets using inappropriate language.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commissions (MCMC), in a statement yesterday, claimed that its Twitter account was "hacked" by unscrupulous parties.
It was referring to tweets in 2014, which were said to have been made when the account was handled by the previous owner.
Screenshots of the tweets made rounds on social media. Since then, MCMC had temporarily suspended the account.
Saifuddin said in a statement today that he viewed the matter seriously and would not compromise on the matter.
"I have ordered the ministry's secretary-general to conduct a thorough investigation, including on how the Twitter account was managed," he said.
Saifuddin added that stern action would be taken against any irresponsible party involved, regardless of their employment status with MCMC.
Lawyer Syahredzan Johan had yesterday questioned the MCMC's statement.
"Even if the account was really hacked, it would be impossible to 'backdate' any tweets," said Syahredzan, who is the political secretary to DAP's Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang.
The Malay Mail had quoted one 22-year-old Nazrul Hakim as saying he had sold the MCMC's account - at the time with 50,000 followers - for RM1,300 to another person.
Malay Mail reported that it contacted the said person, believed to be a former or current staff member of the MCMC, for comment. - Mkini
