Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin said the reason why private kindergartens will remain open in states under the movement control order (MCO) is due to working parents.
He said unlike the first MCO in March last year, where a substantial part of the economic sector was closed, several sectors under the current MCO will remain open.
"The current MCO is different from last March, which was stricter with the economic sectors were closed.
"Those who are working need to send their children (somewhere), so we are allowing kindergartens to be open," Radzi told a briefing in Putrajaya today.
However, he said, it is the prerogative of parents whether they want to send their children to private kindergartens.
Under the current MCO, the manufacturing, production, construction, services, trade and distribution, as well as plantations and commodity sectors, will continue to operate.
However, only 30 percent of the administrative staff will be allowed to work at their offices, while the rest must work from home.
The leeway given to private kindergartens has become a topic of interest as most primary and secondary schools under MCO states would be closed to most students.
Asked why government kindergartens will not be allowed to open like the private ones, Radzi said this is because all government education facilities will follow the same rule - only students sitting for exams can go to school.
All other students are required to engage in virtual learning from home.
He stressed that private kindergartens must still comply with the standard operating procedures.
Eight states and federal territories will be placed under MCO from midnight in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19.
They are Penang, Selangor, Malacca, Johor, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan. - Mkini
