BERA: A newborn baby girl was discovered abandoned in a box at an oil palm plantation in Kemayan near here today.
An angler who had gone to the plantation for fishing activities found the baby with its umbilical cord still attached at about 1.45pm.
The 35-year-old man immediately alerted the Kemayan police station before a team of policemen and medical staff were deployed to the scene.
District police chief Deputy Superintendent Mansor Samsudin said investigations revealed the man had parked his motorcycle in the plantation when he spotted a brown box left by the roadside.
"Upon inspecting the box, he was shocked to find a baby wrapped in black batik cloth. Initial checks by a medical officer revealed the baby was born today between 5am and 7am.
"The baby, weighing 2.12kg, had its umbilical cord still attached. Apart from ant bites, the baby did not suffer any other injuries.
"Checks revealed the baby had been cleaned with murky water before it was left inside the box," Mansor said in a statement today.
Mansor said the baby was sent to the Kuala Pilah Hospital to be examined by a paediatrician and the Bera Welfare department had been informed of the find.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for child abandonment. - NST
