KUALA LUMPUR: The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination scheduled to start on Feb 22 should proceed as planned, says the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP).
NUTP president Aminuddin Awang said another postponement to the exam will severely impact students in terms of their tertiary education and their ability to enter the workforce.
He said SPM is recognised by many countries, hence another delay will affect its status.
"We hope that the SPM will proceed as planned, despite the current situation.
"We believe that the 2020 SPM students (those turning 18 this year) are mature enough and aware of the Covid-19 situation in the country, hence they can adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOP) at all times," he said after the launch of the MyNUTP application today.
On Nov 8, 2020, Senior Education Minister Dr Radzi Jidin, in a press conference, said the Education Ministry has decided to move the dates for SPM to Feb 22 this year, instead of Jan 6 as announced in June last year.
On calls to postpone the reopening of the new school term nationwide for this year, as the Covid-19 situation in Malaysia shows no signs of abating, Aminuddin said NUTP will fully support the Education Ministry's (MoE) decision.
"Whatever the decision will be (on school reopening), we will support them as they, like us, are concerned about the safety of students.
"We believe the decision is supported by facts and based on the risk assessment by the Health Ministry."
On Aug 3 last year, Dr Radzi told the Dewan Rakyat that the new school term nationwide for this year will only begin on Jan 20.
Meanwhile, on the MyNUTP application, Amiruddin said it will benefit its 230,000 members.
He said through the application, members will have access to information on NUTP at their fingertips.
"Members can update their latest teaching locations, where any changes previously had to be be done manually.
"In the application, the members can also apply for death benefits for their spouse, children, or parents."
He said that in the future, the application will also include an e-wallet. - NST
