PETALING JAYA: Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar says his party’s logo cannot be used by Pejuang in the 15th general election (GE15) unless they obtain Pakatan Harapan’s agreement.
This comes after Pejuang pro tem deputy president Marzuki Yahya said the party may consider contesting in GE15 using the Amanah logo if it continued to face problems in its application for registration.
Mahfuz maintained that Amanah was still a part of PH, which meant that any use of the party’s logo needed to be decided by the coalition.
“For example, in the last elections, we agreed to contest under the PKR banner. After we won the elections, we used PH’s logo to contest in by-elections. So our principle is clear — only one logo should be used (by all parties),” he told FMT.
“If, for example, PH says we’ll use PH’s logo, that means Amanah’s logo can’t be used, even by Amanah itself. How can we decide to use PH’s logo and then give our logo to another party?”
In response to Marzuki’s remarks, pro-Anwar Ibrahim group Otai Reformis said PH may sever ties with Amanah if it allows Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s party to contest under the party’s banner in GE15.
But Mahfuz called for calm, saying the statement had only come from the Pejuang leader and not from Amanah, adding that his party had not made any decision on this or received any official request on this.
“So, there’s no question about Amanah wanting to go it alone in GE15. Our principle is that we remain with PH.”
However, he added that if the opposition intended to win the next general election, all of them would have to unite, including those outside of PH.
“What’s important is the uniting of the opposition to face our common enemy. Don’t let there be clashes among ourselves.
“If we fight against each other, in the end, the enemy will become stronger,” he said, expressing hope that Mahathir’s group would also agree to contest under one banner in GE15.
Amanah leaders had previously confirmed that a proposal for Pejuang to use its logo was brought up, but no official discussions had taken place yet. - FMT
