GEORGE TOWN: The state government has called off this year’s official annual Chinese New Year open house scheduled for Feb 13 because of the worsening Covid-19 pandemic and movement restrictions in place.
The event is usually hosted by the chief minister and held on the first day of the lunar new year.
Chief minister Chow Kon Yeow’s political secretary Teh Lai Heng also said that the Miao Hui festival at temples would only be held virtually for nine days from Feb 12 as planned.
He also reminded all Penang assemblymen not to host any open house events “no matter how small”.
The Penang chief minister’s new year open house has been an annual event and has been attended by as many as 10,000 people at the SPICE convention centre at Relau. The event is usually also attended by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri and his wife. - FMT
