Penang DAP launches signature campaign to restore 4 infrastructure projects

Penang DAP has launched a signature campaign to rally support for four major infrastructure projects approved during Pakatan Harapan's time in Putrajaya but subsequently cancelled by the Perikatan Nasional federal government.

State DAP chief and Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the projects' termination showed PN's intention to sideline the state from any major development plans.

The four projects comprise the RM100 million Penang Hill cable car project; the RM800 million Penang International Airport expansion project; the federal government loan guarantee for the construction of the Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) system and maintaining the iconic Penang ferry service.

"In fact, (then chief minister) Lim Guan Eng had during last 14th general election campaigns had asked voters whether they supported these projects and if so, to show it by their votes," said Chow, pointing out that the people had voted for the Harapan state government to remain in power in Penang.

After winning GE14, Chow said Harapan during its 22-month tenure had initiated steps to start the four infrastructure projects including seeking funds and initiating preliminary discussions.

"Through a mass signature campaign, Penang DAP calls on the PN government to stop its political vengeance against the state and the people of Penang.

"This signature campaign will serve to rally Penangites against the historic betrayal of Penang by the PN government and to immediately reinstate these four infrastructure projects," said Penang DAP secretary Lim Hui Ying (above) who read out the state DAP leadership's statement at a press conference in George Town.

Overall, Penang DAP pointed out the state had seen only minor returns in contrast to its RM94.7 billion contribution to the national GDP in 2019 - the fourth largest contributor among all states - while recording RM7 billion in annual revenue contribution.

The public can contribute their signatures at the service centres of all DAP MPs, and state assemblypersons as well as at DAP offices throughout Penang.

Alternatively, the campaign is also accessible online. - Mkini
