Perak DAP assemblyperson sacked for reportedly applying to join MCA

 

DAP's disciplinary committee has decided to terminate Malim Nawar state assemblyperson Leong Cheok Keng's party membership with immediate effect.

It was previously reported that Leong had applied to become a member of MCA on Jan 5.

"The DAP constitution does not allow any party member to be a member of another political party.

"Any person found to apply or hold the membership of another political party will have their DAP membership terminated, as such dual membership is deemed a treachery to the party," said DAP disciplinary committee chairperson Chong Chieng Jen.

Chong, in a statement today, said the party sent Leong a show-cause letter on Jan 6 over media reports that he had applied to join MCA.

However, Leong told the media on Jan 15 that he will not reply to the show-cause letter. This act was described by Chong as "defiance and arrogance".

"Such defiance and arrogance to the internal party's disciplinary mechanism are not acceptable.

"More importantly, it renders credence to the report about him applying to join MCA, which is a fundamental breach of party discipline and a compromise to the integrity of a party leader."

Chong added that Leong has left the disciplinary committee with no alternative but to terminate his party membership with immediate effect.

When contacted, Leong told Malaysiakini that he has not been informed by the disciplinary committee regarding his termination as a DAP member.

“I haven’t been informed. You are informed earlier than me," he said.

Leong also said it was premature for him to comment on the matter right now and that he would only comment once he receives the membership termination letter from the DAP. - Mkini
