KUALA KANGSAR: The water level of Sungai Perak here is approaching alert level after heavy monsoon rainfall since the beginning of this month, especially in the dam area, executive councillor Mohd Zolkafly Harun said today.

The reading was 32m, 1m below the alert level, at 2pm today. “This is worrying and can be dangerous if not managed immediately,” Zolkafly told reporters after an inspection at Dataran Lembah jetty today.

Residents along the river and others should be prepared to face possible floods as the monsoon season is expected to last until March.

He said Tenaga Nasional has implemented a controlled water release since last Thursday to ensure that the water level at the Bersia and Kenering dams, both in Gerik, are at a safe level. - FMT
