Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has been urged to confirm or deny if RM35.4 million in taxpayer funds will be spent on a hall in the constituency of Pagoh.
In a statement today, Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir claimed that a letter from the Prime Minister's Department's implementation coordination unit (ICU) to the Works Department describing the matter had been widely shared online.
He said that if the contents were true, he wished to ask if it was appropriate to spend millions on the hall at a time when the country was struggling to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Wouldn't it be more appropriate if the funds were prioritised for frontliners and reduce the burden of the people who are facing both an emergency and the movement control order?" asked Akmal.
Malaysiakini has attempted to reach the Prime Minister's Office for a response.
Akmal noted that the date on the letter coincided with the day the proclamation of emergency was made - Jan 11.
"Could this mean that during an emergency, the Perikatan Nasional government can spend as they want when Parliament is suspended?
"Honourable prime minister, we seek clarity," he said.
Muhyiddin is in his seventh term as the Pagoh MP.
