Police record Guan Eng’s statement over 2019 remarks

Police recorded a statement from DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng in Penang today on his remarks in 2019, amid the movement control order (MCO) being imposed in the state.

Lim said upon being summoned by the police, he went to the Timur Laut District police headquarters and was questioned by an officer from the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman.

He was accompanied by his lawyers RSN Rayer and Ram Karpal Singh, who are also the Jelutong MP and Bukit Gelugor MP respectively.

In a Facebook Live broadcast before entering the police headquarters, Lim questioned whether questioning him face-to-face amounted to a violation of the movement control order restrictions.

“I am still required to come during MCO and this is not a problem since we are prepared to cooperate.

“But this raises a second issue, that (Defence Minister) Ismail Sabri Yaakob said face-to-face meetings are prohibited. This seems to violate what the defence minister had said,” Lim added.

He also questioned why parliamentary and State Legislative Assembly sittings have been suspended through the emergency proclamation period, while the police could still summon people for questioning under the MCO.

“This not only violates the Parliament’s authority, but also threatens democracy,” he said.

RSN Rayer

When contacted later Rayer told Malaysiakini that Lim was questioned for about an hour.

Rayer also confirmed that Lim was questioned on two press releases he issued in 2019.

On Dec 22 last year, Lim decried having been called for questioning on Christmas Eve, claiming that it was a “Chrismas gift” from the Perikatan Nasional government and amounted to political persecution.

However, he did not specify the contents of the two press statements.

The next day, Lim said the inspector-general of police had contacted him personally to apologise for the oversight and postponed the questioning. - Mkini
