Probe on PJ traffic cop after assault video goes viral

Police have launched an internal investigation into one of their traffic policemen for allegedly assaulting a motorcyclist who supposedly tried to escape from a roadblock along the Federal Highway in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

According to Petaling Jaya district police chief Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal, the incident took place between 8am and 9am today at KM28.3 of the highway heading towards Kuala Lumpur.

In a statement, he said the motorcyclist, whose wife was riding pillion, had tried to flee from the roadblock when several traffic policemen tried to stop him.

"During the attempt, the man hit one of the police personnel on the leg with his bike.

"Other officers at the scene then managed to apprehend the motorcyclist," Nik Ezanee said.

It was after this that one of the policemen was caught on camera assaulting the motorcyclist, or seeming to do so while the latter was still sitting on his bike.

The clip, captured by an unidentified person from across the road, has gone viral on social media.

Nik Ezanee said the motorcyclist was later fined for three offences, namely not using the motorcycle lane, having no licence and using an expired road tax.

Checks also found that the man has been fined 58 times before for various traffic offences.

Police want to contact the motorcyclist to facilitate the investigation into the assault as he has not lodged a police report over the incident.

"However, in the meantime, a police inquiry paper has been opened and an investigation is now being conducted on the police personnel involved.

"We are consistent and strict when it comes to any wrongdoing by our officers and personnel. An investigation will be conducted thoroughly and action will be taken if they are found to have committed any offence," Nik Ezanee said. - Mkini
