Putrajaya is amending the Emergency Ordinance that is now in place to increase the amount of fine against those who flout rules in Covid-19 prevention, said Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The defence minister told a press conference today that they are doing so because the government finds that many still failed to follow the standard operating procedures (SOPs) that had been set to control the pandemic.
"I want to inform you today that because many still do not follow the SOPs, the government is amending the Emergency Ordinance to increase the amount of fine against individuals and companies.
"It also involves an increase of punishment when cases are taken to court," he said.
Ismail, however, did not mention the amount or the punishment they are looking at. He was also not asked to elaborate on this matter during the presser.
For the record, only government-linked media are allowed into press conferences presided by Ismail several times a week to brief on the latest government decisions pertaining to the movement control order.
"So, I hope the rakyat will not wait until authorities take action against them. Because what is important is self-discipline, and the SOPs in place are not to burden the rakyat, but so that you can take care of your health," Ismail added.
Under existing laws, the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988 only provides RM1,000 maximum fine against those found flouting SOPs during the pandemic.
The Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 that was gazetted on Jan 11, 2021, also does not stipulate fines against those who flout the SOPs. - Mkini
