Previously barred from opening under the movement control order (MCO), self-service or coin laundromats can now operate under one strict condition.
Such laundromats must ensure they have staff at their outlets to monitor for standard operating procedure (SOP) compliance. They will be allowed to operate from 6am to 8pm.
This was announced by Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob this evening.
“After taking into account the people’s requests and complaints, today we have agreed to allow self-service laundromats to operate on one condition - the shop owner must place employees to monitor and supervise the shop.
“This means the shops must conduct temperature screening at the entrance, provide (hand) sanitisers, and monitor for physical distancing when customers are queuing up to wash their clothes in the machines,” he said during a televised press conference.
Only government-owned media were allowed to attend the press conference in person.
Ismail said officers from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry will be conducting checks at self-service laundromats. Those who fail to follow the rules will be instructed to close.
Today marks the second day the MCO has come into force in five states (Selangor, Penang, Johor, Malacca, and Sabah) and three federal territories (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan).
