Sabah govt wants jumbo butchers to be caught and charged in court

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government wants the culprits behind the butchering of an endangered Bornean pygmy elephant caught and charged in court, says state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin (pic).

He said the Sabah Wildlife Department has been ordered to carry out a full and detailed investigation into the killing where the jumbo was shot seven times, skinned and chopped up to several parts in the state's central Tongod district.

"We are taking it very seriously. We want those involved in crimes against wildlife to be charged for the crime," he told reporters in Ranau when asked about the actions currently being taken on Sunday (Jan 24).

On Jan 22, a worker at a plantation found the jumbo's chopped up and decomposing body along the estate's boundary near Kampung Imbak in Tongod.

However, the elephant's tusks were not taken, but the half body was skinned off.

Jafry had accompanied Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin to check the landslide at a parking lot area outside the Kinabalu National Park.

Jafry said that there was a need to carry out repairs quickly in the area as it was used by tourists visiting the park.

The landslip occurred during a downpour that triggered flooding over many parts of Sabah last week. - Star
