IPOH: A scrap metal collector pleaded not guilty to three charges of rioting, destruction of public property and harming a police officer at the Magistrates’ Court here today.
Arnee Ahamad Pazir, 44, made the plea after the charges were read to him before magistrate Nur Melati Diana Abdul Wahab.
On the first charge, Arnee is accused of rioting at the Lahat police station on Sunday morning under Section 90 of the Police Act 1967, which carries a maximum fine of RM500 or a jail sentence of not less than six months, or both, if convicted.
He is also charged with committing mischief by causing damage under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of two years or a fine, or both.
On the third charge, he is accused under Section 324 of the Penal Code of attacking policeman Mohamad Anuar Mohd Noor with a helmet. If found guilty, he could be imprisoned for not more than 10 years or fined or both.
Nur Asmaniza Muhamad appeared for the prosecution while Arnee was represented by lawyer Ranjit Singh.
The court set Feb 10 for case mention to hand over documents and granted Arnee bail of RM4,000.
Earlier, Ranjit asked the court to allow Arnee to post a lower bail, saying he worked as a scrap metal collector and was struggling with financial problems.
He said the case was the result of a misunderstanding after Arnee asked police for an explanation of the standard operating procedures for eateries. - FMT
