Scrap RM35m Pagoh halls, channel funds for Covid-19 efforts, MP tells PM

Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasiris has urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to scrap or suspend plans to build three halls in the latter's constituency for RM35 million.

Akmal, who is PKR Youth chief, said the prime minister should instead focus on combating Covid-19.

"As I can't ask this in Parliament (which is suspended), can the prime minister cancel these projects immediately so we can prioritise efforts to combat Covid-19?" he said.

"Can't we postpone building these three halls [...] isn't it better to channel the funds so we can expand swab testing, increase the capacity for quarantine centres and strengthen frontliners?" he added.

Yesterday, a letter alleging that RM35 million was being allocated for the construction of a hall in Pagoh, Muhyiddin's constituency, went viral.

The Prime Minister's Office clarified that the funds were to construct three halls, not one.

It also said the project was not awarded via direct tender but had followed "procurement procedures for tenders approved by the Finance Minister".

Akmal, however, questioned what that meant.

"Can the prime minister explain the meaning of 'procurement procedures for tenders approved by the Finance Minister'?

"Is it an open tender or not? Based on the contents of the viral letter, works on the sites are to begin on March 1.

"Six weeks to carry out an open tender in this current movement control order and emergency is quite impossible," he said. - Mkini
