GEORGE TOWN: A senior citizen has been remanded for two days, until tomorrow, to assist investigations into a police bribery case.

The remand order was granted by Magistrate Jamaliah Abd Manap following an application made by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) assistant superintendent G. Jayarah.

The 63-year-old woman, clad in an orange lock-up t-shirt, was brought to court at about 10am.

The woman, represented by counsel Zainal Akram Zainal Azahar, is alleged to have offered police a RM28,150 bribe as an inducement to release those arrested when police smashed a cigarette and beer smuggling syndicate on Tuesday.

The case is investigated under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Act 2009 for bribing civil servants.

It was reported that the woman was detained along with six local men, aged between 27 and 67, for their alleged involvement in a cigarette and beer smuggling syndicate in the state.

All of them were detained during Ops Kontraban by a team of police from the Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department in the southwest and Seberang Prai Tengah districts.

During the operation, police managed to seize 184,800 sticks of kretek cigarettes and 1,632 cans of beer without tax worth RM151,536 and RM10,883 respectively.

Besides that, police also seized six vehicles worth RMRM40,000 and cash totalling RM218,187, bringing the total amount of seizure to RM448,756. - NST
