JOHOR BARU: Three Johor Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (Maqis) enforcement officers were arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in connection with investigations into the meat cartel.

The suspects, aged between 40 and 55, were arrested at the Johor MACC office about 7pm on Monday to help in the investigations under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.

The suspects were brought to the Magistrate Court today where a six day remand order, beginning today until January 23, was issued by Registrar Nor Fathiah Mohd Fedzir.

Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrests but declined to comment further as the case is still under investigation.

With the arrests, a total of 11 people have been arrested in connection with the case.

MACC had earlier arrested eight people in connection to the case including a delivery agent, two MAQIS officers and the directors and employees of two importing companies.

It was recently reported that the authorities have uncovered a cartel specialising in importing non-certified meat and passing them off as halal-certified products. - NST
