UiTM student defends lecturer over 2019 study trip to DAP headquarters

A Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) student has defended their teacher - who is reportedly under pressure to resign - for taking them on a study trip to the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur in 2019.

The 23-year-old said the trip was part of their class on Malaysian politics, and that it was the political science students themselves who chose to visit DAP.

Malaysiakini is withholding the student's name to protect them from reprisal from the university.

Previously, it was reported that Che Hamdan Che Mohd Razali had allegedly been “pressured” to resign as Raub UiTM deputy rector on Dec 28, 2020.

Malaysiakini is still waiting for a response from UiTM over the matter.

The student said if the allegations were true, it would be improper to punish Che Hamdan over the study trip.

"It's improper because we (students) chose DAP for our study trip because it's in our subject's syllabus.

"We didn't go there to learn their ideology that would make us join the party, we just want to learn more about political parties in Malaysia," the student told Malaysiakini.

According to them, the trip on Dec 2, 2019 - when DAP was still part of the government - involved around 41 students.

"We met with Lim Kit Siang. DAP told us about the history and the founding of DAP. It was not more than that," they added.

The student said as students from the political science faculty, they should have the right and freedom to learn about political parties, and this should not be linked to the parties' ideologies.

"We're befuddled that this is an issue, we just went there to learn, not to partake in politics.

"If the allegations (about Che Hamdan) are true, is it wrong to go on a study trip? What's the purpose of learning about political parties in Malaysia then?" they asked. - Mkini
