Woman and sons arrested over death of a five-year-old girl

KUALA LUMPUR: A 61-year-old woman and her two sons were detained in connection with the suspected abuse and death of a five-year-old girl at a condominium in Sentul.

City police chief Comm Datuk Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said police received a tip-off from a resident on Jan 2 about a suspected child abuse case.

'"A police team was immediately deployed to the scene on the same day and found that a girl had died while under the care of the woman. Investigations showed that the girl was placed under her care since 2019.

"The victim's father is working in Vietnam while her mother ran away a few years ago," he told a press conference at the city police headquarters on Friday (Jan 8).

Comm Saiful Azly said following the discovery, police detained the woman along with her sons aged 22 and 34 to assist in investigations which have since been completed.

"Today (Jan 8), the woman will be charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 as the girl was found with physical injuries. Her two sons have been made prosecution witnesses," he said.

Comm Saiful Azly commended the resident who came forward to alert the police.

"An innocent child has died as a result of possible abuse. The public should act as the 'eyes and ears' of the authorities as it is important to be attentive and be a 'busybody' so that crimes can be prevented," he said.

Those with information on any unhealthy or criminal activities should contact the city police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or any nearest police station. - Star
