A woman who was fined RM1,000 for not wearing a mask when exiting her car has released CCTV footage disputing police's claim that there were others near her at the time.
In the video released on Twitter, Nur Izzati Aqilah Lokman Hakim is seen in a relatively empty parking lot with several parked cars and no other individuals.
The video shows a woman exiting her vehicle before a patrol car pulls over and an officer approaches her.
Nur Izzati said she was fined in front of her cafe in Segamat on Jan 20 because she did not wear a face mask.
She said she was about to help her child out of the car when it happened and no one else was around.
"Can you imagine? I had just exited the car to go to the other side to help my child out.
"I wasn't in a crowded place. My cafe wasn't open yet but I was fined because I am not a politician. Even the shops around my cafe were closed," she added.
Nur Izzati said besides the police officers, the only people there were she and her children.
She argued that Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob on Dec 15 said face masks are not compulsory if one is alone or not in a crowded place.
However, yesterday police justified the fine and said there were other individuals in the same area.
"At the same time, there was an employee with the individual who was wearing a face mask.
"Therefore, her statement that there were no people around in the area and it was not crowded is not true," said Johor police chief Ayub Khan Mydin Pitchay.
Nur Izzati said she initially wanted to dispute the fine but has decided to accept it after police dug their heels in.
"I have accepted it. I will just have to wait for Judgment Day by the Almighty," she added.
Contacted today about the footage, Ayub said police would not make further comments on the case.
Previously, it was reported that individuals have been fined for not wearing their face masks while alone in public parks or for lowering their face masks in public transport.
However, there have been various instances where politicians and public figures have been photographed at events without face masks, including in crowded areas.
There have been no reports of politicians fined for not wearing face masks or for wearing them improperly. - Mkini
