PETALING JAYA: The government has unveiled the names of the seven members of the special task force which will study the Pulau Batu Puteh sovereignty case.

Law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said four lawyers — Abu Bakar As-Sidek Mohd Sidek, Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin, Tengku Fuad Ahmad and Baljit Singh Sidhu — will assist the task force chairman Mohamed Apandi Ali in the matter.

Wan Junaidi said Firoz and Abu Bakar previously handled the sovereignty review application before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) between 2016 and 2017.

“The task force will present its findings and recommendations to the Cabinet within six months from the date of formation (Oct 29),” he added.

Besides the lawyers, Wan Junaidi said former Malaysian ambassador to The Hague, Ahmad Nazri Yusof, is also part of the task force, while Wan Nuzul Wan Mansor will serve as the secretary.

The team will also have officials from Wisma Putra, the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC), the Department of Survey and Mapping, as well as representatives from the Johor government.

The Pakatan Harapan administration wrote to ICJ to withdraw the sovereignty review application on May 28, 2018.

Last month, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the Cabinet had agreed to set up a special task force, which would seek the views of international legal experts on the request to review the ICJ decision.

Ismail said the Cabinet had also decided to obtain preliminary legal views on any negligence in the decision to discontinue the review and interpretation of the ICJ judgment.

The world court subsequently decided that sovereignty of the island, known as Pedra Branca in Singapore, rested with the republic. - FMT
