AYER KEROH: The Election Commission has reported 43% voter turnout in the Melaka state election as of 1pm, according to its Twitter post. This comes to about 204,000 votes cast so far.

A total of 476,037 voters are eligible to vote in the Melaka election at 217 voting centres.

The highly-anticipated snap election sees Barisan Nasional, Perikatan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan vying to form the next state government.

There are a total of 112 candidates standing in the 28 seats up for grabs, with three six-cornered fights, five five-cornered fights, nine four-cornered fights and 11 three-cornered fights in store.

Aside from the three coalitions contesting in all 28 seats, 22 independents, and candidates from Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (Putra) and Parti Perikatan India Muslim Nasional (Iman) make for an especially crowded field in this state election.
