5,000 contract doctors to protest again on Dec 8

Hartal Doktor Kontrak says the peaceful assembly will be held simultaneously across the country.

PETALING JAYA: More than 5,000 contract doctors will stage another nationwide protest on Dec 8 over several unresolved issues involving their service.

Hartal Doktor Kontrak, the group pushing for contract medical officers to be given permanent posts, said the upcoming rally was not anti-government or a political movement, but rather to seek justice for contract doctors.

“The peaceful assembly will be held simultaneously across the country in hospitals with contract doctors,” Hartal Doktor Kontrak spokesman Dr Muhd Yassin said in a Kosmo report.

According to the report, there would be resignations of contract doctors starting on that date.

Muhd said the protest would be held during the contract doctors’ break period at about noon and would last for an hour before they resume their duties.

“We just want to express our dissatisfaction. However, we will still prioritise patients and ensure that it will not affect our work at hospitals.

“The rally is expected to be held in parking areas, in front of wards and hospital lobbies. We will also ensure that participants comply with SOPs by wearing face masks and maintaining physical distancing,” he said.

In July, Hartal Doktor Kontrak gave the government 26 days to resolve issues over the contract system or face a nationwide walkout.

At the strike, which was held on July 26, contract doctors demanded a fair career path and the same benefits as medical officers in permanent positions.

Earlier, on June 29, the Malaysian Medical Association revealed that only 789 out of 23,077 contract doctors had been given permanent positions in the country’s public healthcare system since 2016.

On Nov 2, the movement threatened to organise a second strike in protest against the recent Budget 2022 announcements. - FMT
