Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, who is the Chancellor of the University of Malaya (UM), announced the re-appointment of Dr Aishah Ong as the university's pro-chancellor at the 60th UM Convocation opening ceremony today.
Aishah who was earlier appointed UM pro-chancellor from February 2003 to 2008 and was the first woman to be appointed to the post.
UM also conferred the Emeritus Professor title to academician and economist Prof Jomo Kwame Sundaram in appreciation of his contribution to education, at home and abroad, during the first session of the convocation ceremony.
The convocation ceremony conducted in accordance with Covid SOPs will be held across 13 sessions beginning today until Nov 27.
This year’s convocation will see 5,276 graduands receiving their scrolls. This consists of 467 doctoral degrees, 1,581 Master's degrees, and 3,228 Bachelor's degrees.
Among the graduands receiving the Doctor of Philosophy award was Lim Tien Hong from the Economics and Administration Faculty, who is visually impaired.
Also celebrating their success in attaining their doctoral degree from the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty were Mior Roslan Mior Mohd Jaafar, 66, and N Damalingam, 60.
