SHAH ALAM: The rush to hold the Melaka polls during the pandemic has led to “nonsensical” SOPs being implemented, says Anwar Ibrahim.

He says this has led to a volunteer being slapped with a hefty fine merely for wearing a jacket with a party logo.

The opposition leader wondered what the political logo had to do with safeguarding the community’s health.

“Would one’s health be affected by donning clothes with a logo?” he asked after attending a town hall on the Undi18 initiative here.

He also blamed the former Umno-led state government and the Melaka governor for inconveniencing the people.

The then state government, he said, had advised Melaka governor Mohd Ali Rustam to dissolve the state assembly. Anwar said Ali did not review the matter thoroughly and decided to go ahead with the dissolution.

“And now look at what has happened? We have nonsensical SOPs.”

Last night, PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil said a Pakatan Harapan volunteer was fined RM4,000 for wearing a jacket with a party logo during a walkabout in Kampung Melaka Pindah, Alor Gajah, on Nov 10.

Melaka police chief Abdul Majid Mohd Ali said election SOPs prohibited walkabouts and other forms of physical campaigning during the state election.

Party workers are barred from wearing attire that bears any party logo, among others.

The Election Commission had previously barred all 112 candidates from holding gatherings and conducting face-to-face campaigns as well as making house visits.

The Melaka election will be held on Nov 20. - FMT
