PARLIAMENT | Amending the state constitution to enable the appointment of five assemblypersons in Malacca state legislative assembly will not stop defection of government lawmakers, said Khoo Poay Tiong (Harapan-Kota Melaka).
"BN pledged (in its election manifesto) to amend the state constitution to appoint five state assemblypersons if it wins in the Malacca polls because it has no faith in its candidates.
"Umno is afraid that they will defect. They want to have (additional) five lawmakers so that the state assemblypersons will not defect.
"But I would like to advise Umno: this is not going to stop defection," he told Dewan Rakyat while debating 2022 Budget.
Khoo (above) cited the Warisan-led Sabah state government which collapsed in 2020 despite the state legislative assembly having allowed the nomination of five assemblypersons in addition to the 60 elected representatives.
Former Sabah chief minister Shafie Apdal was forced to dissolve the state assembly on July 30, paving the way for snap polld, after BN claimed it has the support of 33 assemblypersons out of 60 seats.
"So, the most important thing is for us to pass the Anti-Hopping Act (in Parliament)," said Khoo, who is also Malacca DAP election director.
In its state election manifesto, BN pledged to amend the state constitution to appoint five unelected lawmakers.
BN deputy chief and the coalition's election director Mohamad Hasan said having more lawmakers will ensure political stability - the main thrust of BN's election manifesto.
He said the five appointed lawmakers will include youths and non-political figures. - Mkini
