Bukit Aman verifying with Jais on Nur Sajat's molest and assault claims

The police are checking with the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) to ascertain the veracity of Nur Sajat Kamaruzzaman’s claim that she was assaulted and molested by Jais officers.

“We are still seeking verification from the religious department whether the wrongdoings as alleged by the person (Sajat) against its officers happened,” said Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Abd Jalil Hassan.

Jalil was speaking at a press conference in the federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman, Kuala Lumpur, earlier today when he was asked for an update on the cosmetics entrepreneur’s case.

Last month, Nur Sajat had claimed in an interview with the New York Times that she was assaulted and molested by religious officers.

She claimed the incident took place at the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) office in January this year after she was summoned by the department over public complaints.

Nur Sajat, who is a transperson, fled to Thailand in September after Malaysian authorities issued an arrest warrant for her failure to attend a Syariah Court hearing.

She was detained by Thai immigration in Bangkok after the Malaysian government voided her passport.

Nur Sajat eventually fled to Australia while holding a United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Card.

Jalil told reporters that police are aware of Nur Sajat saying that she is now in Australia, but they have yet to receive official confirmation from the country’s authorities.

He said Bukit Aman would seek Australia’s assistance to extradite Nur Sajat.

“We will try to get their assistance, according to the rules and laws in Australia.

“However, it is up to Australia’s sovereign rights (whether to extradite Sajat).” -Mkini
