MELAKA: The DAP’s candidate for the Kesidang state seat, Allex Seah Shoo Chin, in refuting the MCA’s claim that he is “sexist”, insists he did not mean to disrespect women in a video clip which has gone viral on social media.
He also claimed the video had been edited to remove one part of his remarks.
In the video which Seah said was recorded on Friday, he is seen near his campaign centre in Malim, Melaka, where MCA campaign workers were removing BN flags which had earlier been put up to block Pakatan Harapan flags.
“I hope our opponents, whether from BN or PN, can be a bit more gentlemanly. Don’t be like women, doing things sneakily that others aren’t supposed to know about. Even women are more gentlemanly than you,” he said in the video.
Seah said the video – in which he spoke in Malay and Mandarin – was meant to admonish a group of men and not aimed at women.
“That’s totally not true,” he told FMT when asked if he felt he had disrespected women in the video.
“I hope my words don’t become twisted. If you look at my video in Mandarin, I did mention one thing… The nature of men compared with women,” added the Kesidang incumbent who is aiming for his second term.
Seah accused the MCA of editing the video to remove the last paragraph, which said, “Even women are more gentlemanly than you”.
The video accompanies a press statement from Wanita MCA national head Heng Seai Kie, who called on Seah to apologise and pledge to stop making “disparaging comments” against women.
She also called on DAP women leaders to state their views on Seah’s statement.
“It is high time that Allex Seah should learn how to respect women and not deliberately or unintentionally utter words which degrade women,” she said.
“His Freudian slip exposes his intrinsic self which looks down on women,” she claimed. - FMT
