Idris and co are 'traitors', Muda is not - Syed Saddiq

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has called on Pakatan Harapan not to negotiate and cooperate with “unprincipled party hoppers” in the forthcoming Malacca state election.

This call comes after reports of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim pledging support for Idris Haron, who was sacked from Umno for bringing down the Malacca government, and Idris’ allies.

In a statement today, Syed Saddiq (above) clarified that while he wanted Harapan to win the Malacca election, he did not support the coalition’s stance on the said assemblypersons.

It is also understood that negotiations are currently ongoing between Harapan and the youth-based party Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), which is led by Syed Saddiq.

“I supported the idea of a united opposition and I signed a statutory declaration for Anwar Ibrahim to be named prime minister in the spirit of GE14.

“I even got threatened and charged in court for defending the people's mandate.

“Despite all that we have endured together, it seems that the Harapan coalition, which I’ve worked with closely, prefers to negotiate with unprincipled party hoppers than their close and loyal allies, like myself.

“They see more value in unprincipled ‘katak politik’ (political frogs), which is truly tragic,” Syed Saddiq said.

Yesterday, Anwar vaguely told his party members that Harapan was open to cooperating with two of the assemblypersons who withdrew support for then Malacca chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali, hinting that they originally came from Umno.

The withdrawal of support for Sulaiman was the result of an unsuccessful political coup against the Umno-led state government, which led to the triggering of the snap Malacca state election.

Besides Idris, the three others are Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu).

Syed Saddiq: The four are traitors

Harapan has been clear in its rejection of Norhizam, whose defection from DAP last year had in part contributed to the downfall of the then Harapan-led Malacca government, and did not elaborate on the status of the assemblyperson from Bersatu.

However, Syed Saddiq rejects any cooperation between Harapan and the four assemblypersons, labelling them traitors.

“Harapan should never collude with them and join a band of thieves. Once they betrayed the people’s mandate and chose power over rakyat, they will do it again, and again.

“Never put us in the same room as traitors. Our supporters deserve better than that. The people deserve better than that,” he said.

Syed Saddiq added that colluding with them would contradict Harapan’s stance on anti-hopping laws, making Harapan equally as unprincipled as those that the coalition sought to oppose.

“How are we going to champion the Anti-hopping Bill when we are equally guilty of the same?

“How are we going to punish those who engineered the Sheraton Move when we are supporting the same?” he questioned.

He reminded Harapan that when the four assemblypersons pulled out, they had done so for a reason.

Syed Saddiq said that Idris’ heart was “not for Malacca, not for the people and especially not for Harapan”, claiming that Idris had jumped from Umno to Harapan for the chance to be named as the potential chief minister, not out of the belief that Umno is a threat to the state.

He said the leaked conversation between Idris and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob hinted that Idris was “okay” with Umno and Ismail Sabri.

“So, what makes anyone think that after all of that, there’s even an ounce of loyalty and credibility in these four traitors?” Syed Saddiq questioned.

He called on Harapan to make the “right decision” with regard to cooperating with the assemblypersons.

Yesterday, Anwar revealed that the assemblypersons withdrew their support for the Bersatu-Umno state government based on negotiations with Harapan.

Anwar said that because of this, Harapan cannot abandon them when things did not go the way they wanted. - Mkini
