Malacca polls: 'Main parties' invited to CM debate on Nov 18

MALACCA POLLS | Two broadcast platforms are offering “main parties” contesting in the Malacca state election a chance to participate in a televised debate.

Co-organised by Bernama TV and Dialektika TV, the debate is scheduled for next Thursday (Nov 18) at 8.30pm.

This is two days before the Nov 20 polling day.

In a joint statement today, both platforms said the debate will involve representatives and chief minister candidates from “main parties”.

“To date, several party blocs that are contesting (in the state election) are considering if they are prepared to attend this debate.

“The debate format will be detailed after we have confirmed the attendance from all invited political blocs,” they said.

While they did not specify which parties had been invited, the three political coalitions contesting in the Malacca election are BN, Perikatan Nasional (PN), and Pakatan Harapan.

Meanwhile, both platforms encouraged audiences to participate in the upcoming event by typing their questions into the comment box when the debate is aired live.

“It is hoped that this debate will start a new chapter for more dynamic and progressive politics for the country’s future development,” they said.

Bernama TV is the television arm of the government-owned newswire agency Bernama.

On its website, Dialektika TV says it is a “content consulting agency” working in policy advocacy in line with national development. It publishes forum and talkshow-style videos on Facebook and Youtube.

Chief minister race

To date, only Harapan and BN have named their Malacca chief minister candidates.

Harapan has endorsed Amanah’s Adly Zahari - who was chief minister between 2018 and 2020 when the coalition governed the state.

BN, meanwhile, has announced Umno’s Sulaiman Md Ali as its candidate. Like Adly, he is also a former chief minister and served from 2020 until the state government collapsed last month.

However, Sulaiman previously turned down the idea of a debate, saying he preferred to focus on campaigning.

PN is the only bloc yet to announce a chief minister candidate but the two frontrunners are believed to be Bersatu’s Mas Ermieyati Samsudin and Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen.

PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin teased yesterday that the bloc’s chief minister candidate is from Bersatu but said a name will only be revealed closer to polling day. - Mkini
