MOH: Malacca Covid-19 situation under control ahead of polls

COVID-19 | The Covid-19 situation in Malacca has not stabilised but has been under control, the Health Ministry said.

Malacca Health Department director Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said new cases, active cases, deaths, patients in intensive care and the R-naught number are all lower on the epidemiological week 45 (ending Nov 13) compared to the previous week.

"The situation in Malacca is not stable. The 7-day incident rate is still high - 19.9 per 100,000 residents on epidemiological week 45.

"The R-naught in Malacca is not showing a stable trend, although it is lower than the R-naught for Malaysia," Rusdi said.

He said reported deaths have continued on a nine-week downtrend.

New hospital admissions for Covid-19 patients have been trending down for six weeks straight.

In view of the Malacca State Legislative Assembly election tomorrow, the Health Ministry has taken additional proactive measures.

The Malacca General Hospital is able to add additional 721 beds and decant non-Covid-19 patients to the Jasin and Alor Gajah public hospitals. Private hospitals in the state are also prepared to treat Covid-19 patients who chose private medical treatment.

All three Covid-19 assessment centres in the state will continue operations while all public health clinics will provide screening services for those with Covid-19 symptoms. Some health clinics will also provide extended hours of service beyond 9.30pm.

Voters must strictly follow Covid-19 protocols

Rusdi said although the Health Ministry has laid out a detailed plan to deal with a possible surge in Covid-19 patients, he urged voters to strictly follow Covid-19 protocols.

Voters with symptoms will be allowed to vote in a dedicated part of the voting centre. They will be required to wear two layers of face masks and wear gloves.

Voters who are categorised as patients under investigation or patients under surveillance will also be allowed to vote with permission from their respective district health offices.

However, individuals who are classified as Covid-19 positive will not be able to vote because of quarantine orders.

Malacca's other key Covid-19 indicators are looking positive as well. The vaccination rate has reached 76.6 percent of the state population while the quarantine centre for those with mild symptoms is at 27.4 percent capacity. - Mkini
