PUTRAJAYA: The defence in Najib Razak’s RM42 million SRC International case is seeking to defer the Dec 8 decision date on the former prime minister’s appeal.

In a letter to the Court of Appeal registrar, his lawyers requested for the court to deliver the ruling between Dec 13 and 17 instead.

They said Najib would only come back to Kuala Lumpur on Dec 5 from Singapore, and needed to undergo a seven-day quarantine until Dec 12.

“He can only appear in public from Dec 13 after he completes his quarantine,” they said.

Najib is in Singapore to be with his daughter, who gave birth recently.

Earlier today, the chief registrar’s office said the appeals court is set to give its ruling on the case on Dec 8.

Najib is appealing to quash his conviction on seven charges of abuse of power, money laundering and criminal breach of trust (CBT) over the SRC International funds.

The appeals court panel, chaired by Judge Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil, had reserved its decision. The other judges were Has Zanah Mehat and Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera.

High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali sentenced Najib to 12 years’ jail and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty of the seven charges in July last year.

Najib was accused of abusing his power as the prime minister by giving government guarantees on SRC International’s RM4 billion loan from Retirement Fund Inc.

He was also charged with three counts of CBT and three money laundering charges in relation to RM42 million belonging to SRC International, a former unit of 1MDB. - FMT
